Commercial Waste Guildford Health and Safety Policy
Policy statement: This document sets out the health and safety policy for our commercial waste collection and rubbish removal operations across our rubbish company service area. Our objective is to protect employees, contractors, clients and the public by applying proportionate, risk-based controls to all aspects of waste handling, transportation and disposal. This policy applies to all staff and subcontractors engaged in commercial waste services and rubbish collection service area activities and is reviewed regularly to remain current with industry practice.
Scope and objectives
The scope covers collection, transfer, storage and disposal of commercial waste, including hazardous and non-hazardous materials. We commit to continual improvement, safe systems of work, and ensuring incidents are prevented through training and supervision. Our objectives include reducing accidents, minimising environmental harm and ensuring that our rubbish clearance area operations comply with accepted safety standards rather than specific local legal citations.
Risk assessment and control
Risk assessments are carried out for all routine tasks and non-routine activities such as confined space entry, bulky item removal and handling of hazardous substances. Controls include engineering measures, administrative controls and the provision of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). We expect all personnel to follow agreed safe methods and report hazards promptly so that controls in the rubbish collection service area remain effective.
Responsibilities
Management responsibilities include providing resources, policy leadership and monitoring performance. Line supervisors must ensure that staff are competent for their duties and that safe working procedures are followed. Employees have a duty to take reasonable care of their own safety and that of others, to use provided PPE correctly and to report unsafe conditions in the waste removal service area.
Training and competence
We provide induction training, task-specific training and refresher sessions. Training covers manual handling, vehicle loading and segregation procedures, safe operation of lifting equipment and safe use of hazardous cleaning agents. Competence is assessed and documented. Regular toolbox talks and site briefings reinforce safe working in the rubbish company service area.Operational controls and safe systems
- Segregation of waste streams to reduce contamination and handling risks.
- Use of appropriate containment, signage and secure loading to prevent spillage.
- Vehicle and plant inspection regimes, with defects reported and rectified before use.
Personal protective equipment and health
PPE is selected following specific risk assessments and includes gloves, high-visibility clothing, foot protection and respiratory protection where required. Occupational health surveillance is available for roles with repeated exposure to dust, solvents or biological agents. We encourage reporting of health concerns so that reasonable adjustments or further controls can be applied in the rubbish collection service area.
Manual handling, vehicles and traffic management
Manual handling controls focus on mechanical aids, team lifts and correct handling techniques to prevent musculoskeletal injury. Vehicles are driven by trained staff following traffic management plans and safe access arrangements. Loading and unloading areas are kept clear and level, with designated pedestrian routes to separate site traffic from footpaths within the waste removal service area.
Incident reporting, emergency response and review
All incidents, near-misses and exposures are reported and investigated to identify root causes and corrective actions. Emergency procedures cover spillage, fire or injury and are practised through drills. Performance is monitored through audits, inspections and incident metrics. This policy is reviewed at least annually or after significant change to operations in the rubbish clearance area to ensure it remains effective.
Contractors, subcontractors and third parties
Contractors working on our behalf must demonstrate their health and safety competence and follow our policies while on site. We assess contractor controls before engagement and monitor performance. Subcontractors carrying out disposal or specialist removal tasks are expected to provide method statements and risk assessments compatible with our standard operating procedures for the commercial waste services area.
Waste types and hazardous materials
Hazardous wastes, including chemical residues, asbestos fragments, clinical or sharps materials, are handled only by trained personnel using specialist containment and transport arrangements. Where segregation and pre-acceptance checks identify potential hazards, waste is quarantined and managed according to agreed protocols to protect staff and the environment in our rubbish company service area.Monitoring and continual improvement: We commit to measuring safety performance, learning from incidents, and embedding improvements. Performance indicators include incident rates, completion of training, audit outcomes and corrective actions closed. Senior management reviews these indicators regularly to ensure accountability and to maintain a safe, compliant and efficient rubbish collection service area.
